A family in Vance County needs $81,160 per year just to cover basic needs — 3.1× the federal poverty level. Only 31.9% of working-age adults earn a family-sustaining wage. The path to that wage runs directly through technology credentials, which are the most in-demand and underproduced in the region.

The Pipeline Breaks Before High School
With a teacher vacancy rate of 31.3% — also ranked last in the state — Vance County classrooms are chronically understaffed in math and science. 43.9% of students were chronically absent in 2024. The K–12 pipeline is leaking at every stage, and the gap between where students are and where STEM careers require them to be is widening every year.
